Following on from the impressive three trophy win at the recent Sydney International Wine Competition, Elephant Hill’s Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2009 continues its phenomenal winning streak by scooping a Regional Trophy at the prestigious Decanter World Wine Awards 2011. The regional trophy win, one of the top awards of the competition, was awarded for best New Zealand Rhone Red varietal over £10.
Not stopping at the regional trophy win, the impressive judging panel awarded a silver medal to Elephant Hill’s Sauvignon Blanc 2010 and bronze medals to the Elephant Hill Viognier 2010 and Pinot Noir 2009. “Receiving these awards is both humbling and exciting, our team is dedicated to producing elegant wines that best express the personality and character of our stunning region. We’re chuffed that our wines and other great New Zealand wines are shining on the world stage,” said Elephant Hill winemaker Steve Skinner.
Decanter’s consultant editor, Steven Spurrier compared Decanter to the engine room of the wine world, saying, “think of the wine business as an ocean liner: without the engines it would go nowhere.” A staggering 12,252 wines entered the 2011 competition and according to Decanter’s publishing director, Sarah Kemp, “this is 11% more than last year and is a huge endorsement from the world’s wine producers. We had one-fifth of the world’s Master of Wines judging the Awards, and the judges came from over 25 countries”.
