2011 Elephant Hill Pinot Gris
Gold Medal, Air New Zealand Wine Awards 2011The 2011 Pinot Gris is the second we have produced from our Te Awanga Estate vineyard. The low-cropped, fully-ripened fruit was harvested early before a difficult autumn set in. Harvested over three individual hand-picks, the fruit was basket pressed and fermented in a mixture of stainless steel tanks and older oak barriques. The wine remained on light lees for three months prior to going to bottle. This wine displays the hallmark characteristics of this exciting variety. Papaya and yellow peach flavours accompany those of gala apples, pear and grapefruit peel. The nose, with hints of sweet baked apple and white pepper, displays the aromatic nuances this noble variety is capable of expressing. The palate balances richness with crisp acidity and a subtle salinity.
